From Gaythorne to Gumdale

The A-Z of Old Brisbane in Photos

Most of the suburbs in the “G” list of Brisbane suburbs were photographed in the very late 19th century through to the late 20th century. The Brisbane City Council’s Brisbane Images collection supply most of the 20th century photos. And some of them are from a very City Council point of view. You see the history of a butcher’s shop in Gaythorne, endless road views over the years, Courier-Mail Gardens entrants featuring the tidiest and most under-control gardenscapes imaginable.

One suspects that a few properties were photographed ahead of a stern letter or an even sterner knock on the door. Someone in Greenslopes had a junkyard going on visible from the street, and someone in Gumdale boasted a residence apparently constructed of kerosene tins. Presumably a non-smoking establishment.
