Rockhampton in Colour

The magic lantern slide photographer and their trusty aide with the love of dayglo blue skies visited Rockhampton and recorded its wide streets and beautiful buildings. A combination of gold rush money and something that I believe is called “town planning” resulted in the picturesque city on the Tropic of Capricorn.

The view across the Fitzroy River to Quay Street, Rockhampton. Not content with turning the river and sky such a shade, the colourist just had to populate the sky. (See the Brisbane colourised slides.)
The lantern slide panorama of Rockhampton.
Horses and buggies outside businesses in Rockhampton, as the sky mysteriously grows bluer, and giant birds menace the town.
Rockhampton Girls Grammar School. A beautiful example of old Queensland architecture, with its sweeping, wide verandahs.
The Rockhampton Post Office, mercifully free of aerial bombardment, but beset by rather eerie skies.
The Rockhampton Supreme Court Building, the scene of dramatic murder and bushranging trials (Thomas Griffin, Palmer et al) and a home away from home for Edward Hartigan (The Snob).
The School of Arts Building. Unusually crowded out front – the locals presumably decided to take advantage of a bird-free day.
Horses corralled and ready for sale at Rockhampton.
