Inns and Hotels of Renown

A guide to places to stay from 1870 to 1890.

Welcome to the Rock of Cashel Hotel, Surgarloaf via Stanthorpe, c.1870. Parking near Reception. Gentlemen with hats preferred, because, well, that roof.
The Britannia Hotel, Stanthorpe 1872. Family establishment. Very close to shop. Street lighting and off-street parking available.
Miner’s Refuge Hotel, Broadwater near Stanthorpe, c 1872. The hotelkeeper was Stanthorpe pioneer Peter Connell. A couple more sheets of galvanised iron out the front and you could lay claim to a porte chochere.
Thomas Hanlon’s Ferry Hotel, Yatala, 1872. In the 19th century, journeys were longer and hotels stops more frequent as a result. This is a quiet moment on the river, caught just before the arrival of the railways and motor vehicles to transport people and freight.
A rowboat on a bend in the Albert River, Yatala area, 1872. Perhaps heading to the Ferry Hotel.
Nerang Hotel, 1872. Better roofing than anything out west. Extensive parking by the front door. Family atmosphere.
Cosmopolitan Hotel Warwick, 1873. Another William Boag photograph, this time reproduced from a newspaper article. Very fancy.
From The Graphic (London, 1878) This is what one might encounter in a Queensland bush tavern, c 1875.
JC Streiner’s Dugandan Hotel at Boonah, c 1884. It was a big deal in the 1880s, when it started up. Looks like all of Boonah had gathered there. It still stands, and has endured everything from catastrophic flooding in 2011 to the introduction of artisanal bush cuisine. Still has a trivia night, too.
The Inglewood Hotel, Gympie c 1886. After the rough and tumble of the gold rush, Gympie could offer family style accommodation.
